Three Cape Town metro police officers will face corruption charges after allegedly trying to extract a bribe from a motorist, police said on Wednesday.
Sergeant Hilton Malila said the three had fined a man R200 in Observatory's Lower Main road for driving without a valid licence at around 09:00 on Tuesday.
They then allegedly suggested that they could cancel the fine if he gave them R200 in cash. Malila said they agreed to meet later for the money to be handed over. Once they had left the driver phoned metro police headquarters and told them what had happened. Officials there asked the SA Police Service for help. The driver then arranged to meet the three at a garage in Salt River at 15:00 and, during the handover, the police pounced. A struggle ensued between one of the metro police and a policeman and a shot went off. Nobody was visibly injured and the three metro police were taken into custody. The three - aged 30, 31 and 34 - would appear in Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Two of them would face corruption charges. The other would face both corruption and attempted murder charges.
