Bombed, former member of the Nomads bikie gang who had defected to the rival outfit Notorious.
Residents at a well-kept Lane Cove North townhouse estate where an expensive car was bombed yesterday say they are afraid the predawn attack will lead to more violence involving "beefy, bald-headed" identities living there.
One female resident, who did not want to be named, said the target of yesterday'sgun and home-made bomb attack had a number of "friends and associates" throughout Lane Cove North Estate by whom residents were intimidated.
The gang squad is now investigating the attack on the Jeep Cherokee at Walkers Drive about 3.50am yesterday.Police say one of two pipe bombs placed under the car exploded and more than eight bullets were also fired near the car, which was unoccupied at the time of the attack.Investigators say they are being hampered by the "unco-operative" target of the violence, who lives on the street and drives the Jeep regularly but does not own it.The female resident said she was now afraid in her own home."I don't think I will be walking past [the Jeep user's home] any more," she said. The woman said the man had lived at the address for six years and he and the company he kept, including men from "at least three, possibly four" townhouses and units at the complex, intimidated residents."He seems to have a bodyguard with him a lot," she said. "We all avoid them."They park in the visitors' bays all the time and no one challenges them."They are all very beefy with bald heads. They all go to the gym here at the estate and no one else goes there when they're there.
"We were happy to see the police crawling all over the place yesterday. We are all hoping it will scare them off and Lane Cove North Estate can go back to being peaceful and tranquil yet again."
A male resident simply said: "If I was firing at him I would have got him."
The gang squad's commander, Scott White, refused to comment on a report in The Daily Telegraph today claiming the man who had been driving the Jeep was a former member of the Nomads bikie gang who had defected to the rival outfit Notorious.
Detective Superintendent White said it was still unclear what prompted the attack.
"It's a bit difficult to draw a motive when it's so early and there's so little to go on," he said, adding that the act of violence in such a densely populated area was worrying."Of course it's a concern, yes, and we are doing everything we can to get to the bottom of it," he said.Lead investigator Peter Yeomans, from North Shore local area command, said the man who had been driving the car was being "unco-operative" while police investigated why he was targeted.
Detective Inspector Yeomans also refused to comment on any possible gang connection to the crime."I'm not saying whether it's related to gangs. Our main concern is the residents out there," he said.
