courier had swallowed the packages containing 220 grams of cocaine in an attempt to smuggle the drug into Germany from Lisbon via the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca.
Emergency surgery probably saved the life of a drug courier who tried to smuggle 11 packages of cocaine in his stomach to Germany, customs officials said Saturday. The drugs were discovered during an x-ray after the man was detained at Hamburg airport a week ago because his travel papers were not in order. Most of the packages were released through bowel movements, but several became stuck in his intestines and had to be removed by surgery. He is now recovering at a detention centre, the officials said.
