Thomas W. Hurley, 44, of Poultney, pleaded not guilty Monday in Vermont District Court in Rutland to a single misdemeanor charge of transporting marijuana into a detention center.
Corrections Commissioner Robert Hofmann said Hurley had been with the Department of Corrections for seven years.
Hurley was fired Dec. 22.
Court documents say police were contacted by jail officials in October after they suspected Hurley of smuggling marijuana.
Inmates and former inmates told police that Hurley regularly brought in contraband.
Hurley was paid $50 for each package, wrapped in electrical tape, that he brought in.
Hurley told police he thought he was smuggling tobacco.
