He faces up to life in prison.Refco, once among the largest independent U.S. futures traders, collapsed in bankruptcy in October 2005, shortly after it went public. The case has drawn comparisons with the furor over a massive accounting fraud that drove telecommunications company WorldCom Inc. into bankruptcy.
Grant was the lone top executive to face trial. His colleagues in the executive suite, former Refco CEO Philip Bennett and former chief financial officer Robert Trosten, pleaded guilty in February.
"It was just a question of what Tone knew and how he knew it," juror Peter Smalley told reporters outside the courtroom. Asked about Bennett, who did not testify but was a central figure in the trial, Smalley replied, "He's a big crook."
Refco and 23 affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2005, a week after revealing that Bennett had hidden $430 million of bad customer debt. It later liquidated its operations.
